Although we do not recommend any particular brands or types of fuels, it is worth noting that the quality of the fuel you use will, of course, have an effect on both the performance and fuel system maintenance.

Ethanol, Bio Diesel & Water Absorbtion

With the introduction of Ethanol based petrol and Bio Diesel, while there may be some arguable benefit for the environment, these fuels have also created some problems. Ethanol will absorb moisture form the atmosphere causing the potential build up of water in a fuel tank. Water is not combustible and can cause wear in fuel injector pumps and fuel injectors. Modern petrol fuelled engines react very adversely to the presence of water.
Similarly with diesel driven engines, Bio Diesel can also absorb water from the atmosphere. The presence of water in a diesel fuel tank can cause a bacteria to form and grow at the interface between the water and fuel, blocking the fuel filter and causing complete engine failure. Further, with the modern common rail diesel engines, water can become very harmful through the fuel injector pump and particularly the fuel injectors.
While the recommended method of controlling water is to drain the water from a fuel tank, Pro-Ma PT5 Petrol Fuel Treatment and DT5 Diesel Fuel Treatment have a “Surfactant” as a main ingredient. The Surfactant breaks down the water into tiny droplets and then completely encapsulates that droplet within a long chain polymer molecule so no actual water touches any part of the engine components as it is harmlessly expelled through the exhaust system.

Fuels Have a Limited Lifespan

Ethanol based fuels also have a limited life span with the ethanol and fuel separating if fuel is not used relatively quickly. As ethanol is very corrosive, stale fuel can cause serious damage to fuel systems resulting in expensive repairs. Octane Ratings

Another common question and one that can become confusing is, what octane rated petrol fuel should I use. We recommend you refer to your manufacturer’s handbook as some engine manufacturers now have a particular octane rated fuel as a condition of the warranty offered. However, although the PT5 Petrol Fuel Treatment does not technically raise the octane rating of fuel, it gives the same benefit of a higher octane by approximately 4 to 5 points. This can translate to major savings at the fuel pump as lower rated octane petrol can be approximately .14 cents cheaper. Both the PT5 Petrol Treatment and DT5 Diesel Treatment can significantly save money in fuel consumption through the combustion modifier causing fuel to burn completely and more efficiently. Pro-Ma Petrol Treatment, Diesel Treatment and MBL8 Oil Additive

Pro-Ma Performance Products have been incorporated in my regular day-to-day service procedure for over six years.

I first came to know about Pro-Ma Performance Products from a friend of mine who used to rebuild Briggs & Stratton ride-on mower engines. Occasionally a motor would slow up in revs as it would start to heat up. He would stop and change the engine oil, as well as adding the Pro-Ma MBL8 Oil Additive. I have a new Mahindra Pick-Up Dual Cab that has only 20.000 km on the clock. I have been using the Pro-Ma DT5 Diesel Conditioner in my fuel and I also have noticed a drop in fuel consumption. Easier starting, and smoother power on acceleration. Also, when idling the sterning wheel use to vibrate but now with the addition of Pro-Ma DT5 the vibration has just about vanished. Car care detailing does not include body work, painting, mechanical or upholstery repair. This vital part of the huge automobile aftermarket is a “sleeper” that can be profitable, when managed carefully. On a volume basis, car care detailers “prep” new and trade-in used cars for dealers. But the highest profits per car come from performing high-quality, car care cosmetic maintenance on automobiles owned by proud private parties.

Most car care detailers are craftsmen, not businessmen. Few promote their service aggressively; many are in out-of-the-way locations such as alley garages and parking lots. Not many realise the true profit potential. Even under these circumstances, average gross profits in this loosely-knit industry are $150,000, with pretax net profits in the $95,000 range. This represents an average of 37 to 41 percent of total sales. These margins are lucrative as a percentage, but most car care detailing operations which stay in business for any length of time are owner operated, meaning that the owner is the primary labor force. Thus this industry is essentially providing a good income for properly motivated, skilled, and hard working owners.

What is car care detailing?

While there are no specific guidelines for what actually makes up a 'car care detail,' it is always more extensive than washing and drying a car, and will often involve many steps. Main goals are typically beautification and protection, but can also touch other areas such as minor paint repair and surface restoration, as well as thoroughly cleaning areas which are normally ignored such as the engine and under chassis, wheels, tyres, and trim.

The steps of a basic exterior car care detail of the paint surface generally consist of, in this order, wash with Pro-Ma Maxi Sh ine which seals and waxes, chamois dry, polish with Pro-Ma Maxi Dri-Kleen. Which removes grime, tar, bugs, tree sap, use once a month depending on the condition of the paint.

Purpose of car care polishing

The purpose of car care polishing when you use Pro-Ma Maxi Silk is to remove light oxidation, swirls, scratches, water deposits, and other imperfections from the paint. In contrast use Pro-Ma Maxi Shield, which removes contamination, heavy oxidation and surface imperfections. Car care polishing generally is the single most time consuming step in an exterior car care detail.

Car care polishes typically are classified in two categories, a chemical car care polish or abrasive car care polish. A chemical car care polish, such as Pro-Ma Maxi Silk, cleans the surface and removes light oxidation. An abrasive car care polish such as Pro-Ma Maxi Shield removes a small portion of the clear coat or the base paint itself on single stage paint. Abrasive car care polishes are typically called compounds, and are classified based on how abrasive they are. The car care polish with the least abrasion such as Pro-Ma Maxi Dri-Kleen typically is called a finishing car care polish. A finishing car care polish is used to remove the haze resulting from application of a more abrasive car care polish. Abrasive car care polishes work best when applied with a machine rotary buffer or machine random orbital buffer. Different pads are used on the buffer depending on the abrasion level of the car care polish.

Purpose of Sealants and Waxing

Silicone sealants such as Pro-Ma Maxi Dri-Kleen provide much more durability than even the best carnauba wax. They are liquid in form and apply very much like a liquid wax.

For best results, the surface of the vehicle should be properly washed with Pro-Ma Maxi Shine wax.

Waxing with Pro-Ma Maxi Shine further enhances the gloss and depth of the paint, and provides even more protection. Pro-Ma Maxi Shine wax comes in a liquid.

Experience is required when working with car care polishes. Car care polishing agents remove oxidation, surface contaminants and also some of the clear coat surface. An inexperienced car care polisher can create swirl marks on the painted or clear coat surface. Swirl marks can be hidden or masked when applied with wax but will return once the wax wears off.

About ten years ago our diesel fuel specifications were very different from what they are today.
Our diesel fuel contained much higher levels of sulphur, ranging from 0.5% to as high as 2.5% by weight.
Most of our diesel fuel originated from the bass strait oil field and contained a relatively high wax component.
Australia was divided into five regional zones for basic cloud point and cold filter plugging point limit zones.
The minimum automotive diesel fuel cetane rating was 40.
Most of the other component specifications have remained relatively static.
The Australian standard for automotive diesel fuel originated as AS3570-1988 and the second edition, AS3570-1998 replaced the original. This standard applies to fuel for high speed diesel engines, which operate above 800RPM. During February 1999 the ash percentage by mass was reduced from 0.1% to 0.01%.
Under the above standard, Australia is now divided into 12 zones and the maximum limits for cloud point vary for each zone for almost every month of the calendar year.
The cloud point is the temperature at which the wax crystals in the diesel fuel commence to form and become visible as a whitish cloud.
The cold filter plug point is the temperature at which these wax crystals agglomerate sufficiently to plug the fuel filter. The temperature difference between the cloud point and the cold filter plug point will vary with different batches of fuel and different climatic zones.
In some areas kerosene or heating oil are mixed with diesel fuel to improve cold weather starting. Caution is advised with these actions, as this could affect fuel viscosity, wear rates and contravene storage regulations.
The Commonwealth Government has introduced another specification, the fuel standard diesel determination 2001, which commenced on 1 January 2002.
Sections of this determination that are of special interest to us that the sulphur content must not exceed 500mg/kg from December 2002 and 50mg/kg from 1 January 2006. I have written a number of articles in recent years covering the result of the reduction of sulphur content in diesel fuel. Please refer to these for further information.
Another requirement from this determination is that from 1 January 2002 the cetane index of diesel fuel must be at least 46. In recent times this index has been as low as 40.
The cetane number in diesel fuel is a measure of its ignition quality. As with the octane rating of petrol, the test fuel is compared with a combination of two reference fuels that give the same ignition quality and anti knock rating.
If the cetane number is too low, the delay between injection and ignition is longer, white smoke on start up may become apparent in cold weather and ignition knock becomes more apparent. Prolonged use of low cetane diesel fuel can result in severe engine damage. Conversely, high cetane index fuels result in easier starting in cold weather, reduced white exhaust smoke and reduced diesel knock.
As a point of interest, the cetane index for the diesel fuel used in the T.A.F.E. report test was 52.
Some of the specifications above have been obtained from the Australian standard AS3570-1998 and from the Fuel standard diesel determination 2001. Additional information can be obtained, if desired, from this literature.
To obtain the best results from your diesel fuel, it is important that you protect it from climate extremes, under cover if possible. Ensure your fuel supply is fresh and is the appropriate summer or winter blend.
Changeover dates at the refineries are mid March and mid September, so allow for transport times to your area and avoid long term storage, as fuel deteriorates rapidly.
Use Pro-Ma Diesel treatment at the recommended dosage at each fill to help control fuel and combustion deposits, condensation accumulations, lubricate injection pump and injectors, improve combustion, reduce exhaust emissions and minimize cold flow problems. Its benefits far exceed its cost.

WOMEN ON WHEELS

Lets look at the WOW factor many drivers of vehicles are women, who use their vehicles regularly for family and business use. Vehicle reliability is critical. Breakdowns can have serious implications for your safety, and for your purse or pocket. The following information lists what you can do to minimize break downs and help avoid unnecessary expense.

ENGINE:
Yes ladies, this is what an engine looks like it is generally placed in the front of the vehicle under the bonnet.
Check the engine oil level weekly, when the engine is cold, and the vehicle is standing on level ground.
The correct level is shown at the full mark on the dipstick. Use the correct grade of engine oil as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, and at the set service interval. Change, or have the oil changed, using a genuine oil filter, and add Pro-Ma MBL 8 Concentrate at standard dosage as specified. If the engine uses more than one litre of engine oil between oil changes, look for oil leaks where the vehicle stands overnight, or there may be a mechanical reason for the oil usage.
A genuine oil filter will contain a filtering element, the correct mesh to screen out harmful debris, yet allow the correct flow rate for hydraulic tappet settings. It will also usually contain a drain back valve, to prevent oil draining back into the sump during shut down, and a by pass to allow oil flow to continue to flow if the filter element becomes blocked.
Most oil filters screen between 15-50 microns in size. Pro-Ma MBL 8 Concentrate particles range from 1-10 microns in size, so they will pass through the oil filter freely. A filter that screens below 10 microns could screen out the copper and lead particles in MBL 8 as well as some of the ingredients blended into the oil by the oil company.
Modern engines are computer controlled, and most are fitted with self adjusting tappets. The ignition timing is set in the factory, and is not a maintenance item.
Check your manual for the spark plug replacement interval. Some spark plugs do not need to be changed for 150,000 kilometres.

COOLING SYSTEM:
Most engines are liquid cooled, and the liquid is either a corrosion inhibitor water mixture, or an anti-freeze anti-boil water mixture, containing ethylene glycol and in some cases, a corrosion inhibitor as well. Check your owners manual for the recommended product.
Cooling systems are pressurised via the spring loaded radiator cap.
Never remove the radiator cap when engine is hot, as this could result in you becoming scalded.
Most modern cooling systems have a plastic see through reservoir. Check the level when the engine is cold, and maintain the level between the max and min levels.
If you need to add liquid, do not use tap water or the garden hose as it will react with the heat of your motor and cause rust and calcium build up inside your motor and block up your radiator, Add inhibitor and filtered or distilled water mixture at 10% concentration. If ethylene glycol concentration drops below 30% the solution becomes corrosive.
If you want to change to Pro-Ma Maxi Cool or Anti-Freeze Anti-Boil, the cooling system should be cleaned using Pro-Ma Ultra Flush first. There are a number of inhibitors and coolants in the market place that are not compatible, and can cause radiator corrosion and blockage.

MANUAL GEARBOX:
No minor servicing required. MLB 8 Concentrate can be added to the gearbox lubricant at the dosage rate of 20 mls per litre of gear oil.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:
No minor servicing required. Check fluid level as per manual. Use only factory recommended fluid. Some are factory filled, and do not have a dipstick. Do not add anything to the special automatic fluid. DO NOT USE MBL 8.

DIFFERENTIAL:
No minor servicing is required.can be added to conventional differentials only. Do not add to limited slip differentials.

CLUTCH AND BRAKE MASTER CYLINDERS:
Check fluid levels are between maximum and minimum marks. These contain special fluid. Do not add engine oil. Hydraulic brake fluid should be changed every two years.

BATTERY:
Check acid level monthly, if the battery is fitted with screw caps on the cells. Some are maintenance free. Use only filtered or distilled water for top up. Do not overfill. The correct level is approximately 6mm ¼ inch above the plates.
Be carful not to splash battery acid on cloths or paintwork as the acid is highly corrosive. Keep the top of the battery clean using a paper towel. Ensure the battery terminal clamps are clean and tight, and coat with Vaseline to minimise corrosion.
FUEL SYSTEM:
There are two simple applications here. Use PT5 Petrol Treatment or One Shot in any engine that consumes petrol or gasoline. Use DT5 Diesel Treatment in any engine that consumes distillate fuel. These products should be used from day one for the life of the engine.
Do not allow either fuel injected engine to run the fuel tank dry. Both systems rely on the fuel to supply lubrication for the fuel injection pumps. The poly butane ashless lubricant in our fuel additives can help protect the injection pumps, and they are very expensive to repair or replace, quite apart from the inconvenience or other hazards that can occur at these times.
Clean or replace the air filter element as per the schedule.

TYRES:

Check pressure weekly. The correct pressure and tyre fitment is shown on a label on the drivers door pillar, or handbook. You’ll get better fuel economy and longer tyre life. PAINTWORK:
Keep the exterior clean by washing regularly with Maxi Shine and warm water. Cover one panel at a time, working from the top down, and hose off before solution dries. Do not use washing up detergents as these can affect the colour and finish adversely.

PROTECTION FOR YOUR VEHICLE

Most Vehicles today have steel bodies which are pressed into a variety of elaborate shapes to suit the manufacturer’s styling requirements.These metal panels are accurately located in jigs to ensure uniformity, and then welded by sophisticated robot welding machines to produce a strong attractive body shell.The body shell is carefully finished to remove any minor imperfections and joints are sealed before it receives its protective coatings. Some components are coated with a galvanic compound to minimize rust.

Many manufacturers today immerse the completed body shell in a large tank of rust proofing compound where the protective coating is applied by an electrostatic charge.This ensures a complete coating in places not normally accessible by spray equipment.This coating is very thin, usually about 0.05mm ( 0.002” ). The next application is the prime coats, followed by a wet rubbing process to ensure a smooth key surface to bond the finish coats.The final coats are usually solvent or water based acrylic paints.

Modern assembly plants apply the final coats using airless sprays, robotic arms and some manufacturer’s conveyor systems traverse the painted body shell through baking ovens to ensure hard durable paint finishes.Modern practice is to apply a clear gloss coat over metallic paint finishes for additional protection. If the vehicle is to be transported to a remote area many vehicle manufacturers apply a wax coating to the completely assembled vehicle to protect against industrial fallout, rail wagon brake dust etc.When your vehicle or machine is new, it looks magnificent in its shiny paint coating.

However, as soon as it is exposed to ultra violet light, the surface finish commences to deteriorate.Oxidation begins and the upper surfaces start to deteriorate. In the long term the surface becomes dull and chalky and rust can appear. You only have to look at the vehicles in a car park to see the results of lack of protection of these surfaces. You will also see examples of faded and cracked padded dash panels from long term exposure to ultra violet light.This is where Pro-Ma Performance Car Care products can help.

Most paints are not completely waterproof. You will notice vehicles which have stood in rain for several days where the paint has become saturated. When the sun comes out, humidity blisters appear as the water tries to evaporate through the pores of the paint and separates the paint from the body or paint layer from paint layer.Contrast this with vehicles that have been treated with Maxi Shine or Maxi Dri-Kleen.

The wax or silicone coating provides protection from the ultra violet rays, the water beads up when wet and the water runs off any sloping surface. A waterproof coating has been applied to the paintwork protecting the paintwork and the underlying steel from deterioration.

These products are also useful around the home and office on white goods, filing cabinets etc. Maxi Shine is also excellent for removing mould and mildew from aluminium awnings and for vinyl and ceramic tiles.Apply Maxi Shine in the shade to a panel at a time and hose off before the product dries on the surface.

The instruction for application is on the label.Alternatively apply Maxi Dri-Kleen in the shade, sparingly, to one panel at a time. Wipe gently with a porous cloth whilst wet to absorb the soil and polish gently with a clean cloth such as a singlet for a great shine.Maxi-Sheenis an excellent product providing ultra violet A, B and C protection to padded dashboards, vinyl bumper bars, protection strips and tyres.

This product is slow drying and leaves a satin finish to match the original equipment finish to these components.It does not leave dashboards with a glossy finish that can reflect in the windscreen and cause visibility problems. Use sparingly and apply a small quantity with a cloth rather than spraying onto the surfaces. MORE THAN JUST A PUNCTURE SEALANT

Two months ago I was driving my Toyota Town Ave Van around the industrial estate at Ernest on the Gold Coast, when I heard a clicking sound coming from my front left hand tyre.
When I stopped to investigate, I discovered that a bike chain sprocket had embedded itself into the tread. Knowing that I had a box of Pro-Ma Puncture Sealant with my display products in the van, I drove to the nearest service station and pulled out the bike chain sprocket, which in turn let the air escape.
Immediately I inserted the Pro-Ma Puncture Sealant, spinning the tyre which sealed the hole in the tread. I then pumped up the, checked the pressure and continued to do my deliveries. Today, I am still driving around in the same vehicle without changing the tyre (I usually travel around 1000 km every week) and have had no further problems. I would high recommend for everyone to put this product into their tyres. You just never know when this situation could happen to you. Don’t wait until it does!!
